The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall alert for all Bella Cucina brand “Zip Cooker” ovens, model number 03908, on February 8, 2007. Unfortunately for unsuspecting cooks, Bella Cucina “Zip Cookers” can quite simply blow their tops.
Imported from Korea, the ”Zip Cooker” is marked on the bottom of the stainless steel nine quart pot with name, model number and production date. The pot has a matching lid with black side and top handles. Called a low-pressure cooker, the ”Zip Cooker” has expelled hot foods onto users, causing serious burns. Manufacturer HSN L.P., formerly known as the Home Shopping Network, has received seven reports of burns that resulted in eight injuries involving first, second and third degree burns.
A higher number of degrees designated in a burn indicates an increase in severity. First-degree burns involve the epidermis, or outer skin, causing redness and local pain. Second-degree burns blister and fill with clear fluid. The superficial dermis and/or the deeper dermis layer can be affected in second-degree burns. Third-degree burns produce hard, leather-like scabs called “eschars” that actually separate from the unaffected part of the body. There may be a purple fluid as well as destruction of nerve endings in the affected areas. After healing, third-degree burns can remain thick and discolored, disfiguring the burn victim. Burn scars may require surgical revision.
The recalled cookers were sold on the HSN television network, website and toll-free number from February 2003 through March 2004, and at the HSN employee and retail outlets from March 2003 through June 2004 for about seventy dollars. In total approximately 8,300 units are recalled.
All consumers should stop using ”Zip Cookers” model number 03908 immediately. Consumers who do not receive direct notification should contact HSN L.P. at 1-800-837-0372 for instructions on receiving a refund.
