Only a month after a recall of its Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution, Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. is seeing the recall’s financial toll. The contact lens company said it is losing between 95 cents and a $1.15 per share on revenue of over $1 billion.
On May 29, 2007, Advanced Medical Optics said it still had no explanation for why its contact lens solution was causing an outbreak of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a rare eye infection in which amoebae invades the cornea of the eye.
Advanced Medical recalled Complete MoisturePlus solution after a CDC analysis found users were seven times more likely to suffer infections.
Acanthamoeba infection is rare but can be caused by failing to follow cleaning instructions or by poor practices, like sleeping with lenses in place. Officials say other factors, like how the chemicals in the solution interact with certain lenses, may contribute to the development of the infection.
