Bravo! Recalls Dog and Cat Food due to Salmonella, Listeria Concerns

Recalled products put humans at risk as well

09/20/07

On September 18, 2007, Bravo! LLC, a Connecticut-based producer of food for dogs and cats, recalled three of its poultry-based feeds. Two of the feeds may be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, while the third has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Bravo Basic Formula Finely Ground Chicken frozen raw food and Bravo Original Formula Chicken Blend frozen raw food were both found to potentially be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, while Bravo Original Formula Turkey Blend frozen raw food was found to potentially be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall for both of the Original Formula feeds covers all 2 pound, 5 pound and 10 pound tubes with a batch ID code of 236, while the recall for the Basic Formula feed covers 2 pound tubes with a batch ID code of 226.

Bravo! promotes a raw diet for pets, and its food comes in frozen tubes. The tube requires that the pet owner squeeze the food out of the tube, putting the owner at risk for contamination as well. In addition to touching the food, an owner may be at risk for Salmonella infection if they touch their pets after the pets have touched the food.

Owners are advised to return all unopened tubes of food to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Owners should also dispose of all open tubes of food in a safe manner before returning the washed plastic batch ID tag to the store where the food was purchased for a full refund.
