ECU timing problems prompts Ducati Motorcycle Recall
Electronic defect could cause motorcycle accident
On October 1, 2007, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Ducati North America is recalling its 2007 Ducati 1098 motorcycles due to a potential electronic control unit (ECU) defect.
On certain motorcycles, the ECU timing and idle mixture were set improperly during the manufacturing process. As a result, when the temperature of the cooling system exceeds 180F, the engine speed may drop and stall the engine. If the engine stalls while the motorcycle is being operated, there could be a motorcycle crash.
Dealers will replace the ECU mapping using a specialized dedicated diagnostic system instrument for free. Ducati North America has yet to release an owner notification schedule, but concerned owners may contact Ducati at 201-264-8327.
All customers may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit http://www.safercar.gov.
