On September 27, 2007, the United States Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall of a dozen different Kolcraft play yards as the result of a strangulation and entrapment hazard. Approximately 425,000 infant play yards are affected by this recall.
Recalled play yards were sold at retail stores nationwide from January 2001 through September 2007 for between $50 and $130. Recalled play yards were sold in a variety of colors and patterns. Models affected by the recall are listed at the end of this article.
The model number is printed on a white sticker located on one of the feet of the play yard. The recalled play yards were manufactured in China.
CPSC received a report that a 10-month-old boy was strangled by the changing table’s restraint strap hanging from his Kolcraft’s “Sesame Beginnings” Travel Play Yard.
In addition to strangulation, one play yard model was also recalled due to entrapment. Kolcraft’s Contours 3-in-1 Play Yard has a raised cradle that rocks back and forth. There have been 45 reports of children rolling and becoming trapped against the side of the cradle.
The CPSC is urging consumers to immediately stop use of the changing tables and rocking cradle. Consumers should immediately cut off and remove existing restraint straps on the changing table. Consumers may contact Kolcraft at 1-888-655-8484 for instructions on receiving a free non-looped replacement strap for the changing table and a free repair kit to secure the base of the cradle. Concerned consumers may also visit Kolcraft’s website at www.kolcraft.com.
