Bumbo seats recalled after reports of three skull fractures in children

Seats can allow children to fall, suffer serious head injuries

10/25/07

On October 25, 2007, Bumbo International recalled about 1 million Bumbo “Baby Sitter” Seats after receiving 28 reports of young children falling out of the seats, including three reports of children suffering skull fractures as a result.

If the recalled seats are placed on an elevated surface like a table, children can arch their backs and flip out of the seat, falling onto the floor and potentially sustaining head injuries.

Bumbo “Baby Sitter Seats” involved in the recall are made of molded foam and come in yellow, blue, purple, pink, aqua and lime green. Leg holes are in the seat and the seat backs wrap completely around the child. “Bumbo” is written on the front of the seat with an image of an elephant on top. The back of the seat contains a warning that says never to use the recalled seats on a raised surface.

The recalled Bumbo seats were sold at stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Kmart, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, and various other toy and children’s stores nationwide. The chairs were sold from August 2003 through October 2007 for about $40.

Consumers can contact Bumbo at 877-932-8626 to obtain new warning label stickers and instructions. For more information, customers may contact Bumbo International, or visit the company’s website.
