“Cars” Backpacks Recalled due to Intestinal Hazards

Magnetic Game Pieces Can be Easily Swallowed

10/31/07

Global Design Concepts Inc., a New York City based importer, recalled about 110,000 “Cars” themed backpacks after it was revealed that small magnetic game pieces included in the backpack could come out of their plastic enclosure and be swallowed. The magnetic attraction of the pieces can present an intestinal perforation hazard or blockage if more than one piece is swallowed. Such a blockage could be fatal.

Global Design Concepts, which imported the backpacks from China, received three reports of magnets coming loose, but no injuries have been reported as a result.

The 12 inch “Cars” backpacks were sold in Target stores nationwide from February 2007 to September 2007 for about $13. Each backpack came with four game pieces: a red plastic car, blue plastic car, and two red and black plastic disks that have “Gas,” “Oil” and “Service” printed in red letters on the black perimeter on the disks.

The backpack has a tag that says “Warning: Choking Hazard-Small Parts. Not for children under 3 years.” The gray vinyl front of the backpack has “Disney Presents a PIXAR film” printed on it.

Consumers should take the magnetic game pieces away from children immediately, and may contact the “Cars” backpacks Recall hotline at 1-877-848-4070 for information on getting a replacement “Cars” wallet or an equivalent product.
