Medical Description
Acanthamoeba keratitis is an infection in the eye that often occurs in healthy consumers. It can result in permanent visual impairment or blindness.
Symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis are similar to symptoms of other eye infections and can last from several weeks to months.
Eventually, Acanthamoeba keratitis will cause severe pain, vision loss or even blindness if untreated.

General Information
Risk factors for developing Acanthamoeba Keratitis are swimming while wearing contact lenses, storing contact lenses in home-made solutions and poor contact lens hygiene.
Patients who suffer from Acanthamoeba Keratitis may have severe corneal scarring, which requires corneal transplantation. Therapy and treatment for Acanthamoeba Keratitis can last longer than one year.
