Prilosec
omeprazole
Prilosec, also called omeprazole, is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a condition in which stomach acids flow backwards, causing heartburn and injury to the esophagus (food pipe between the mouth and stomach). It can also be used with other medications to prevent stomach ulcers.
In a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, Prilosec works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach.
Patients taking Prilosec should contact their doctors if any of the following symptoms are persistent or severe:
* stomach pain * diarrhea * constipation * dizziness * cough * back pain
On August 9, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) completed a review concluding Prilosec does not increase a patient’s risk of heart problems. The FDA completed the review in response to evidence that may have suggested otherwise.
