On July 24, 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of some 8,000 log splitters made by Brave Products Inc. because the hydraulic cylinders have defective rod retention, causing the seals to leak and the rods to detach. If the rods detach, the splitting wedge can rapidly and unexpectedly extend, posing a serious injury threat to consumers.

Brave Products has received 59 reports of leaking cylinders as well as rod retention failure, and one consumer reported a hand amputation that may have been a result of the defect.
