What to do with Castleberry’s products:

The U.S. FDA is warning consumers not to eat certain canned food products produced by Castleberry’s Food Company of Augusta, Ga. If you have any of this product, the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) have all released guidelines that advise destroying these products.

• Consumers who have purchased recalled products are advised not to open or consume them.
• Double-bag the cans in plastic bags, tightly closing them, and then place them in a trashcan for non-recyclable trash outside of the house.
• If any of the cans are swollen, bulging or leaking, put on gloves and eye protection before handling the cans.
• If using gloves, the gloves should be thrown away after use.
• After handling Castleberry’s cans, wash your hands with soap and running water for two minutes.

Dave Melbourne, senior vice president for Castleberry Food Company, confirmed the company had suspended all food production in Augusta, Georgia, after it was determined all four cases of botulism were linked to chili sauce cans produced on the same production line. Melbourne confirmed that botulism contamination occurred in the recalled chili sauce because the product was undercooked.
