Corporate Summary
Castleberry’s Food Company is a manufacturer of specialty canned foods.
On July 18, 2007, the company recalled 10 of its canned meat products because they may have been contaminated with a botulism toxin. On July 21, 2007, the company expanded its recall, bringing the total number of recalled products to about 90.
By the time the Castleberry’s Food Company announced the recalls, four consumers had fallen ill after eating the canned meat.
What to do with Castleberry products
The U.S. FDA is warning consumers not to eat certain canned food products produced by Castleberry’s Food Company of Augusta, Ga. If you have any of this product, the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) have all released guidelines that advise destroying these products.
- Consumers who have purchased recalled products are advised not to open or consume them.
- Double-bag the cans in plastic bags, tightly closing them, and then place them in a trashcan for non-recyclable trash outside of the house.
- If any of the cans are swollen, bulging or leaking, put on gloves and eye protection before handling the cans.
- If using gloves, the gloves should be thrown away after use.
- After handling Castleberry cans, wash your hands with soap and running water for two minutes.
Additional information for safely disposing of the recalled products can be found at the CDC’s Botulism page.

FDA Calls Castleberry Food Recall Urgent Public Health Matter
On July 18, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that 10-ounce cans of Castleberry’s Hot Dog Sauce, Austex Hot Dog Chili Sauce, and Kroger Hot Dog Chili Sauce, marked with “best by” dates from April 30, 2009 to May 22, 2009 could be contaminated with toxins that cause botulism.
Two days later, Castleberry Food Company expanded the recall to include other canned meat products that are also potentially contaminated with Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum). The expanded recall now includes more than 90 separate products manufactured by Castleberry Food Company, and range from canned chili with beans to beef hash to canned barbeque pork.
Calling the Castleberry recall “very big,” David Elder of the FDA’s office of regulatory affairs called the potential for widespread botulism infections “an urgent public health matter” (Source: Reuters, July 23, 2007).
