Medical Description

Asbestosis is a breathing disorder caused by inhaling asbestos fibers, and prolonged accumulation of these fibers in the lungs can lead to scarring of lung tissue and diminished breathing capacity. While symptoms of asbestosis usually do not appear until years after exposure, they often worsen and can lead to death if exposure to asbestos continues.

Symptoms

• shortness of breath, initially only with exertion, but eventually even while resting
• decreased tolerance for physical activity
• coughing
• chest pain
• finger clubbing in some cases

General Information

In November 2007, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), an organization comprised of asbestos victims and their families, found a variety of consumer products and popular toys contaminated by asbestos, which could lead to asbestosis.
