Corporate Summary
Ducati North America oversees production of the popular Italian motorcycle company in the United States and Canada. One study by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Ducati 1098 as one of the ”superbikes” that might be responsible for an increase in motorcycle-related fatalities. ”Superbikes” are motorcycles that are designed to be bigger, faster and more powerful. They also have sophisticated braking and suspension systems, which make them easier to ride for beginners. These superbikes accounted for only 10 percent of all motorcycles registered in 2005, yet were responsible for about 25 percent of all motorcycle-related fatalities. Ducati began selling the 1098 in early 2007. It has 160 horsepower, comparable to that of a Honda Accord EX Sedan, yet weighs less than the average motorcycle did ten years ago.
In October 2007, Ducati North America recalled 2007 Ducati 1098 motorcycles due to a potential electronic control unit (ECU) defect.
On the 2008 Ducati Hypermotard, the battery can move from side to side inside the fuel tank mounting compartment, causing damage to the main wiring harness at the battery terminal. This could cause an electrical short which could lead to the engine shutting off. Engine stoppage increases risk of crash, which could result in serious personal injury.
