Medical Description
Fire hazards arise when a combustible object - anything from cloth to gasoline - ignites. The hazard exists when there is a greater than normal risk of harm to people or property due to fire. All fire hazards pose burn hazards to people. Fire hazards also include the toxic chemicals let off by the fuel sustaining the fire.
But not all burn hazards are fire hazards. A burn hazard arises when an object produces enough heat to cause harm to a person’s flesh. A burn hazard could be an exposed pipe in an engine or a fire in a person’s kitchen from a faulty toaster oven.
In 2005, 3,675 Americans lost their lives, and 17,925 Americans who were injured as the result of fire. And there were 1.6 million fires were reported. According to the U.S. Fire Administration any others went unreported, causing additional injuries and property loss. Direct property loss due to fires was estimated at $10.7 billion by the administration.
