Medical Description

Dizziness is the feeling of unbalanced sometimes accompanied by blur vision and nasuea. The body’s balance is determined by controlled by a number of signals that your brain receives from several locations: eyes, sensory nerves, and inner ear. Two of the three sensors must be working properly to have good balance.


Symptoms

  • A sense that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving (vertigo)
  • A loss of balance
  • Nausea
  • Unsteadiness
  • Wooziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Faintness
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Blurred vision after quick head movements

General Information

There may be a number of potential causes of *dizziness. These may include:

  • Vertigo - the false sense of motion or spinning usually caused by a problem with the nerves and the structures of the balance mechanism in the inner ear. Vertigo is can be accompanied by abnormal rhythmic eye movements, inflammation in the inner ear, meniere’s disease (excessive buildup of fluid in the inner ear), vestibular migraine (migraine that is sensitive to motion), and/or acoustic neuroma (growth on the acoustic nerve).

  • Feeling of Faintness (presyncope) - feeling faint and lightedheaded without lossing consciousness. Usually accompanied by nausea and pale skin. Common causes include drop in blood pressure and in adequate output of blood from the heart.

  • Loss of balance (disequilibrium) - loss of balance or the feeling of unsteadiness when walking. Common causes include: inner ear problems, sensory disorders, medications, joint and muscle problems.

  • Lightheadnesses - having the feeling of spinning inside the head. Common causes include: inner ear disorders, anxiety disorder, and hyperventilation.
