Details

Product: Symbyax
Manufacturer: Eli Lilly and Company

Symbyax is a combination of fluoxetine (the active ingredient in Prozac) and olanzapine (the active ingredient in Zyprexa). Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) antidepressant while olanzapine is an antipsychotic medication. The combination is prescribed for the treatment of depression caused by bipolar disorder (manic depression).

In July 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated information about SSRI’s to include facts about a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome. This condition occurs when SSRI’s are taken at the same time as medicines used to treat migraine headaches, called triptans.
