Medical Description

* Hyperlipidemia* is elevated levels of fatty substances called lipids in the blood. There are two subcategories of hyperlipidemia: hypercholesterolemia (high level of cholesterol) or hypertriglyceridemia (high level of triglycerides). Fatty substances can travel in the blood by attaching to proteins. This is called hyperlipoproteinemia.


Symptoms

  • Usually no noticeable symptoms
  • Tend to be discovered during routine examination or evaluation for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
  • Numerous pimple-like lesions across the body
  • Pancreatitis

General Information

* Hyperlipidemia* is high levels of fatty substances in the blood. * Hyperlipidemia* contributes to blockage of arteries which may lead to a heart attack.

Common causes of * hyperlipidemia* include hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels), pregnancy, and kidney failure. Other causes include diabetes, excess alcohol consumption, obesity, and certain prescription medication.

* Hyperlipidemia* can be treated by first treating the potential underlying medical problems which may include dietary changes, weight reduction, and exercise. After lifestyle modifications have been proven not to provide optimal lipid levels, then medication may be necessary.
