Zyban

bupropion hydrochloride

Zyban is an atypical antidepressant that is also prescribed as an aid in a smoking cessation program. The active ingredient in Zyban, bupropion hydrochloride, is also found in Wellbutrin.

Wellbutrin was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1984, but a significant incidence of seizures at the original approved dosage of 400-600 mg caused the removal of the drug from the market in 1986.

Wellbutrin was re-introduced in 1989 with a maximum recommended dose of 450 mg per day.
