Discovery pacemaker

Guidant Corporation warned physicians on July 18, 2005, that replacements might be needed for nine of their pacemaker models manufactured between 1997 and 2000, including the Discovery®. A sealing component in the devices degraded in a reported 69 cases, resulting in higher-than-normal moisture levels inside the devices leading to malfunction.

Several patients have lost consciousness or developed possible heart failure as a result of the pacemaker malfunction.
