Baby bibs sold exclusively at Wal-Mart Stores and featuring Sesame Street characters or embroidered prints were recalled on May 3, 2007 in Illinois due to the presence of lead in the bibs. The Chicago Tribune reported on May 3rd that Wal-Mart pulled the products from shelves nationwide but is only offering a refund to customers in Illinois.

The bibs are at the center of a lawsuit against Wal-Mart Stores by the Center for Environmental Health (CEH), a non-profit consumer advocacy group in Oakland, CA. Testing on the products by CEH found lead at 9700 parts per million (ppm), a level that is 16 times the legal limit for lead in paint.

CEH recommends parents avoid vinyl bibs, as lead is a common stabilizer used in vinyl plastic. “Parents need to know that vinyl is a poison plastic that doesn’t belong near their kids,” said Carolina Cox, research director at CEH.
