Medical Description
An extradural hematoma is a buildup of blood resulting from bleeding between the inside of the skull and the outer covering of the brain.
Extradural hematoma’s are often caused by skull fractures during childhood or adolescence. It is more common in younger people because the membrane covering the brain is not as firmly attached to the skull.
Extradural hematoma’s occur when a blood vessel ruptures, which bleeds into space between the “dura mater” and the skull. This is most commonly the result of severe head injuries, like those cause by motorcycle or automobile accidents.
It is important to treat an extradural hematoma as soon as possible because rapid bleeding can cause a collection of blood, called hematoma, that can press on the brain and result in brain injury. It can also lead to death if there is a rapid worsening of the buildup of blood.
Health care providers should be consulted for any head injuries that result in a brief loss of consciousness. Symptoms most commonly occurs within minutes to hours after a head injury, and they all indicate an emergency situation.
