Propulsid is used as a treatment for nighttime heartburn. Since its approval, the FDA has strengthened the warning label for Propulsid after reports of 38 drug-related deaths in a five-year period. In June 2000, Propulsid was taken off the market by its manufacturer following decisions that it posed unacceptable risks to patients.

The company decided, however, to continue to make the drug available to patients with severely debilitating conditions. Patients currently taking Propulsid are urged to promptly contact their health care providers to discuss alternative treatments.
