Medical Description
Venous thromboembolism is the syndrome in which blood clots form in the deep veins and often break loose to travel to the lungs. This breakage could cut off blood supply to important organs. The two types of venous thromboembolism is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary embolism (PE)
The process by which blood clots occur and travel through the veins is known as venous thromboembolism, the collective term for DVT and PE.
There are often no symptoms for venous thromboembolism, but if symptoms do developed in DVT and PE, they can include:
Symptoms
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Swelling of the calf, ankle or foot
- Tenderness or pain in the calf or upper leg
- Purple or blue discoloration of the skin on the leg
- Increased warmth of the leg
- Redness of the skin (erythema)
- Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
- Sharp chest pain (worse during deep breathing)
- Shortness of breath (dyspnoea) and/or hyperventilation
- Coughing up of blood (haemoptysis)
- Rapid heart beat (tachycardia)
- Feeling faint/fainting
