Aristolochic acid

Sometimes used in products sold as “traditional medicines” or as an ingredient in dietary supplements, aristolochic acid, sometimes labeled as “aristolochia,” is a carcinogen linked to kidney disease and some cancers.
In April 2001, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers advising them to immediately stop using products containing aristolochic acid.
