General Information

Intestinal perforation is a complete tearing of the wall of the stomach, small intestine or large bowel, resulting in intestinal contents flowing into the abdominal cavity.

Intestinal perforation allows the potential of bacerial contamination in the abdominal cavity. Chemical peritonitis can occur due to a leaked in gastric acid.

Treatment for intestinal perforation depends on the cause of the tear, but surgical procedure is nearly always required.
