Polly Pocket! Quik-Clik Boutique
On November 21, 2006, Mattel Incorporated recalled about 2.4 million Polly Pocket dolls and accessories after receiving reports of injuries from children swallowing magnetic parts.
Tiny magnets inside the dolls and accessories can fall out and be swallowed by children or placed in their nose or ears. If more than one magnet is swallowed, they can attract each other and cause intestinal perforation, infection or blockage, which can be fatal. Swallowing of the magnet may also require immediate surgery.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of 170 reports of the small magnets falling from the toys, including three reports of intestinal perforations to children who swallowed more than one magnet. A 2-year-old, 7-year-old and 8-year-old were hospitalized.
The recalled play sets contain plastic dolls and accessories with small magnets that measure up to one-eighth of an inch in diameter. The magnets are imbedded in the hands and feet of some dolls, and in the plastic clothing, hair pieces and other accessories.
Discount department stores and toy stores sold the products from May 2003 through September 2006 for between $15 and $30.
