Medical Description
Kawasaki Disease involves the skin, mouth, and lymph nodes, and generally affects children under the age of five. Its cause is unknown, but if the symptoms are recognized early, the disease can treated within a few days. If it goes untreated, it can lead to serious complications involving the heart.
Kawasaki disease is rare, occuring in 19 out of every 100,000 kids in the United States.
Ideal treatment begins within 10 days of the fever first. Usually treatment is a series of intravenous doses of gamma globulin or purified antibodies, an ingredient of blood that helps the child’s body fight off infection.
