In November 2007, a Wisconsin couple settled a federal lawsuit against four spinach companies after their children became sick from E. coli in September 2006.

Neil and Anne Grintjes fed their children Dole brand baby spinach in August 2006. A few days later, the boy became sick, suffering from diarrhea and eventually developing a potentially fatal form of kidney failure. He spent two weeks in the hospital and underwent multiple blood transfusions. His sister was also ill and tested positive for the same E. coli strain, but never developed the kidney disorder.
