Medical Description

Hyperkalemia is a condition caused by an irregular amount of potassium in the bloodstream.

When the level of potassium in the bloodstream is higher than normal, the kidneys normally purge the excess from the body. Therefore, hyperkalemia is normally caused by the malfunctioning of the kidney. Kidney problems can lead to:

  • Acute kidney failure,
  • Chronic kidney failure,
  • Lupus nephritis,
  • Rejection of a kidney transplant, or
  • Obstructive uropathy.

Hyperkalemia alone commonly has no symptoms. Often, the following symptoms are observed:


Symptoms

  • Nausea
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Slow, weak, or absent pulse

General Information

Treatment methods consist of intravenous calcium, glucose or insulin, diuretic medications, and/or dialysis.
