Verapamil

Covera-HS is Pfizer’s brand name for verapamil, a calcium-channel antagonist drug, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat cardiac arrhythmias and high blood pressure. Known generically as verapamil, the drug is sold under the following brand names:

• Calan
• Verelan
• Verelan PM
• Isoptin
• Isoptin SR
• Covera-HS

A recent study conducted by British researchers said the blood pressure drug verapamil, when used to treat cluster headaches, may put patients’ hearts at risk. According to the study, 20 percent of patients who use verapamil for cluster headaches, an unapproved usage, suffer heart rhythm abnormalities.
