Medical Description
Bacillus cereus (also known as B. cereus) is a bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. B. cereus exists in normal bacterial and spore forms in foods. B. cereus occurs when food is improperly cooked. This problem is compounded when food is then improperly refrigerated, allowing the spores to germinate. There are two types of toxin, - the Diarrhoeal and the Emetic toxins.

General Information
Diarrhoeal toxins type grow in a variety of foods from vegetables and salads to meat and casseroles. In diarrhoel toxins, the symptoms are characterized by nausea, cramp-like abdominal pains and watery diarrhea, beginning 8 to 16 hours after consumption of contaminated food and are related to the lower intestine.
Eemetic toxins type grow well in rice dishes, mashed potatoes, other starchy foods and vegetable sprouts. In emetic toxins, the symptoms are characterized by ore severe and acute and are nausea and vomiting beginning 1 to 6 hours after eating and are related mainly to the upper intestine.
There are currently no specific treatment to treat foodborne illness due to b. cereus contamination. Fluid replacement is performed if necessary.
