Details

Product: Rezulin
Manufacturer: Warner Chilcott Limited

Rezulin was a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, but was withdrawn from the market in 2000 after it was found to be linked with severe liver toxicity.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed safety data on Rezulin and two similar drugs, Avandia and **Actos. The data showed Rezulin was more toxic to the liver than the other two diabetes drugs.

“When considered as a whole, the pre-marketing clinical data and post-marketing safety data from Rezulin as compared to similar, alternative diabetes drugs indicate that continued use of Rezulin now poses an unacceptable risk to patients,” Director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Dr. Janet Woodcock said.
