Prempro
conjugated estrogens/medroxyprogesterone
Prempro is a hormone-replacement therapy drug containing conjugated estrogen and progestin, used to treat menopause symptoms. The drug helps to reduce hot flashes, episodes of flushing or sweating of the upper body and face. The progestin is commonly found i hormone replacement therapy drugs to help reduce the risk of uterus cancer.
A study released by the Women’s Health Initiative in 2002 found that Prempro was statistically associated with a 41 percent increase in strokes, a 29 percent increase in heart attacks, a 100 percent increase in blood clots, a 22 oercent increase in total cardiovascular disease, and a 26 percent increase in breast cancer.
Prempro is still on the market, but the FDA mandated warnings that doctors should notify patients of the increased risks of the dangerous side effects found in this study before to recommending the drug.
